Huskies Compete on Day One of UP Opener

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's and women's Nordic Skiing teams competed on day one at the UP-Opener held at the Tech Trails on Saturday. The Tech men took part in a 10k freestyle race while the women participated in a 5k freestyle race.

"We had some of the top competitors in college racing today take part in the UP-Opener," Michigan Tech Head Coach Joe Haggenmiller said. "It was a really good field and gave everyone a chance to see where they are at. We have a little work to do, but we have some time do it. Overall, I think the women competed hard and left it all on the race course. On the men's side, we were a bit more competitive in this race and I thought Gaspard (Cuenot) did very well against some of the top skiers in the country. I think we have a little room for improvement, but we gave it all we had today and have something to build on for now."

Carolyn Lucca and Sonja Hedblom were the top two finishers for the Michigan Tech women Saturday at the UP-Opener. Lucca finished eighth overall in the field of 18 competitors with a time of 18:32.0. Hednblom was just a tenth of a second behind Lucca in ninth place with a time of 18:32.1. Lisa König (19:25.6, 11th), Amanda Kautzer (19:41.6, 12th), Ruth Oppliger (20:00.7, 13th), Sarah Wade (20:07.2 14th), and Erin Lipp (20:29.8, 15th) also competed for the Huskies on Saturday.

Sophie Schimpl of Northern Michigan claimed the individual championship by crossing the line with a time of 16:43.5. Vivian Hett of NMU was second thanks to a time of 16:58.5. No team scores were kept in Saturday's races.

Gaspard Cuenot had a strong showing for Tech with a third place finish in the field of 30 athletes. Cuenot hit the line on Saturday with a time of 29:29.0. He was less than a minute behind Adam Martin of Northern Michigan who placed first in the meet with a time of 28:43.8.

Thomas Bye followed Cuenot with the second best time for the Huskies at 30:33.7, landing him in sixth place overall. Dan Wood also cracked the top ten for Tech after logging a 10th place finish by covering the course in 32:28.9. Tomi Mikkonen (32:53.7, 11th), David Jaszczak (33:12.1, 12th), Seth Mares (36:00.8, 21st), Mark Wenzel (36:10.7, 23rd), and Seth Prigge (37:50.2, 27th) were also in the field for the Huskies on Saturday.

Both teams will return to the Tech Trails on Sunday for day two of the UP-Opener beginning at 10:00 a.m.
