Huskies Stumble against Walsh in GLIAC Opener

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech men's tennis team opened the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference portion of the 2017 schedule on Saturday with an 8-1 loss to Walsh University at the Gates Tennis Center.

Mario Neto powered Michigan Tech (1-4, 0-1 GLIAC) in the No. 1 spot with a victory over Vasily Vidmanov in two sets with a tiebreaker that went his way. Illiya Chibirev also turned in a strong performance for the Huskies on Saturday by taking Rodrigo Garcia of Walsh (9-6, 1-0 GLIAC) to three sets. Chibirev swept the first set 6-0 but came up empty in each of the next sets. Ross Whittaker, Felix Zimmermann, Heitor Adegas, and Jose Fedrnandez picked up the other singles wins for the Cavaliers.

In doubles competition, Ricardo Paes and Jacob Prochnow of Tech gave Felix Zimmermann and Rodrigo Garcia a run for their money, coming up just short 8-5. Vidmanov/Whitaker along with Adegas/Fedrnandez recorded 8-3 victories for Walsh in the other two doubles showdowns.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Sunday morning when they host Tiffin University in the Gates Tennis Center for another GLIAC contest at 10 a.m.
