Huskies dominate No. 14 Wisconsin Friday for first win

MADISON, Wis. – Michigan Tech picked up its first win of the season with 6-2 victory over No. 14-ranked Wisconsin Friday (Oct. 26) at the Kohl Center. The Huskies scored five power play goals, had five different players score, and goaltender Matt Jurusik stopped 25 shots against his former team.

"I was excited for this game," Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. "I thought our practices have been really good over the past two weeks. I think our staff did a great job preparing the group tonight. I was nervous about our conditioning later in the game because of how few games we've played, but the guys answered every call tonight.

"I can't thank the Misfits enough for the effort that they put in. They were loud all night long, and I'm thankful they were here and for all the Tech fans that were in the building."

Down 1-0 early in the game, the Black and Gold scored four straight goals to take control. Trenton Bliss scored his first career goal with a 4-on-3 power play tally from Seamus Donohue and Colin Swoyer 5:45 into the game. Bliss one-timed in a cross-ice pass from Donohue.

Tommy Parrottino gave the Huskies the lead 6:00 later with a power play tally from Eric Gotz and Keegan Ford for his first career goal. The initial shot from Gotz was saved and rebounded out to Parrottino for an easy tap-in.

Alec Broetzman scored the first of two on the night—also his first career tally—at the 15:27 mark. Brian Halonen had the primary assist and Ford added his second assist of the night against his former team with the secondary helper. Broetzman went high glove after Halonen carried the puck into the zone and slid it over.

Gavin Gould scored the only goal of the second period for a 4-1 lead 8:20 after intermission. It was his second of the year from Jake Jackson and Jake Lucchini as he cleaned up a loose puck at the side of the net.

Wisconsin (3-2-0) got back on the board 5:24 into the third period on a goal by Roman Ahcan before Tech closed the game with a couple more power-play tallies.

Jake Jackson buried his first of the year at 13:34 from Lucchini and Donohue when he redirected a pass into the back of the net.

Broetzman closed out scoring 16 seconds later on the same power play from Halonen and Swoyer. From the corner, Halonen fed the puck out front and Broetzman tipped it in.

Seamus Malone gave the home team an early 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 3:35 after puck drop.

Tech outshot UW 34-27 on the night with 12 shots in each of the first two periods and 10 in the third. Jurusik made nine saves in the first and eight in the second and the third. Jack Berry had 28 saves for the Badgers.

Seven Huskies recorded two points on the night with Wisconsin natives Broetzman and Bliss scoring their first collegiate goals along with Parrottino. Swoyer and Gotz had their first collegiate points with assists. Tyrell Buckley suited up for his first game as a Husky.

"Halonen and Broetzman both had really good games," added Shawhan. "They're big men and play hard every shift. They're quiet men and silent leaders. Everyone gravitates to guys like that. Bliss was also great tonight on the puck. I'm happy for him for the night he had."

The Huskies were called for seven minor penalties while the Badgers had six minors and a pair of majors. Tech was 5-for-8 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Tech will play game two of its eight-game road trip Saturday (Oct. 27) as the Huskies and Badgers wrap up the nonconference series at 8:07 p.m.
